Mary Pillsbury Lord, United States Representative on the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, will be the principal speaker at the annual meeting of the Minneapolis Urban League tonight (Thursday) at the Leamington Hotel, Hall of States.

A native of Minneapolis, Mrs. Lord did volunteer social work in the city after graduation from Smith College. She moved to New York City after her marriage to Oswald D. Lord.

They have two sons, Charles Pillsbury, serving in the Air Force and Winston, a student at Yale University.

Mrs. Lord's first official connection with the United Nations occurred in 1947 when she was named a member of the US Committee for UNICEF.

She had visited almost all of the countries in Asia, Africa, The Middle East and Europe.

Following a meeting of the Human Rights Commission in Geneva in 1957, she visited Hungarian Refugee Camps in Austria. She has studied child welfare programs in Eastern Europe and Latin America.

The Urban League's annual award for outstanding community service will go to the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. C. D. Gietzen, Division Manager, will represent the Telephone Company. Presenting the award will be Marshall Diebold, Chairman of the Minneapolis Urban League Award Committee.

Northwestern Bell was selected by League directors because of the company's policy of promoting equality of opportunity in employment, thus rendering the Minneapolis community "outstanding service."

Minority group persons are employed in several job classifications, with skill and ability as the basic qualifications for such employment.

The Urban League, a Community Chest Agency, works to improve race relations in the Minneapolis area. Douglas Dayton is president and Robert Williams is executive secretary.

The dinner meeting will be open to the public.
