Mr. Printer
I FIND some persons are alarmed at the project of establishing public schools, lest they should be obliged to contribute to the expense. Sir, if self-defence can be quarrelled with, no wonder self-preservation is. Such is the state of human passions, that ambition, pride and avarice, will create wars, and overturn liberty not resisted unto blood. But some say, the command is express, to offer the other cheek after one is smitten and be both cheeks, head and all, may go.
That matter has been settled; we will fight the enemies of our country— Now for self-preservation--What is this but liberty and the blessings of free government? And can these be realized without knowledge? No. And without public schools the major part of the people will grow up in ignorance, and be the dupes of knaves and tyrants.— This must not be :--Schools must be established, and a general tax to support them.
