FREELING'S AID SOUGHT
Disease Dangerous to Soldiers, Says Commissioner.
Ten new cases of smallpox have been reported to the city health department this month and there are now a total of about fifty cases of this disease in Oklahoma City, according to Mark H. Kesler, commissioner of public safety.
Mr. Kesler has asked an opinion of S. P. Freeling, attorney general, in regard to what steps should or could be taken against other cities and counties of the state sending their citizens suffering with smallpox to Oklahoma City for treatment.
Eighty-four in February
Eighty-four cases of smallpox were reported to the city health department during the month of February.
"It is a crime for any city or county officials to advise any man suffering with smallpox to get on a train to come to Oklahoma City," said Mr. Kesler, "and because of the large number of soldiers riding the trains in this state now, I believe that the government officials will take some action to prevent the soldiers from being exposed to the disease.
"As soon as a smallpox patient from another county reaches the city, he comes straight to the city hall, and is by that action exposing any number of city employees to the disease."
Precaution Taken.
"The cases which have been reported this month are confined to only a few localities, as in one house a mother and three children all have the disease. All probably contracted the disease from the same source. We are taking every precaution against the spread of the disease here and there is no occasion for alarm.
"We would have no smallpox here if it wasn't for the fact that persons with the disease come here from other counties and give it to nearly every person with whom they come in contact."
