OAKLAND, Aug. 3. -(U.P)- The next time someone asks John Porter, laborer, what his name is, he's going to spell it.
It all happened because Mrs. Bessie May Potter couldn't find her husband to make him support their minor child.
She enlisted the aid of the sheriff's office, saying she had a clue that he was working on a gas main near Alvarado. Driving to the scene of the work she suddenly cried:
"There he is!"
Whereupon the deputies approached Porter, and asked him if his name was "Potter."
Misunderstanding the pronunciation, he acknowledged identification, but quickly began to ask questions in turn when he was informed he was under arrest for failure to provide.
And there the matter stood for a few minutes, until Mrs. Potter had a bright idea.
"Smile for me!" she commanded.
"Lady, I'm not your husband, so I won't mind doing that," said Porter, and broke into his best possible grin.
"No, that's not him," said Mrs. Potter to the officers. "My husband has a gold tooth in front. This man hasn't."
