A PREDICAMENT,
The Anaconda Standard, discussing the state university situation, says there is the question of the manner of the state board of education to be considered apart from the motive of that august body. This is obvious to the most casual observer of the existing conditions. And, as we have previously said, it seems to us that the uppermost question, right now, is the board's manner. By its discourteous and unfair method of procedure, the state board of education has jeopardized all possibility of material advancement at the state's institutions of higher education. It will be impossible to obtain high-class men for any faculty if the tenure of office in these positions is so insecure, if men are to be dismissed summarily and without opportunity to hear or to be heard in the matter. There are good men upon the faculty of the state university and upon the faculties of the others of the state's educational institutions, but they will not remain under such conditions as prevail now under the precedent established by the state board last week. Leaving out of consideration, for the present, the motive of the board of education, the apparent fact remains that the board's manner—as the Anaconda Standard puts it—has imperiled the very existence of the state's higher schools. Already the men upon the faculties of these institutions are inquiring as to their standing. They are wondering where the lightning will strike next.
