has very much improved the State House square
by causing a row of trees to be set out around it on the
outside line of the side-walk. This is a thing which
should have been done years ago. But some of the
former librarians (whigs of course) were more intent
on hiding small stealages than in improving the State
property. Dillon, however, don't steal even the "can-
dle ends;" and he will save enough of the latter in
one year, we have no doubt, to pay for the entire cost
of the trees,—for folks must know that some of the
State House candles heretofore had very long ends—
especially when they used spermaceti, as they did
during the glorious era of internal improvements."
The only fault we have to find with Dillon is that he
is a bachelor. This however is owing rather to his
extraordinary modesty, than to an incorrigible indis-
position to marry. Why don't some of our sprightly
young ladies pop the question to him? We'll guar-
antee he'll not dare say no! Wouldn't we crow!
