STATE FINANCES.
The Republican and Democratic Record.
Under the last Democratic Administration
all the proceeds of taxation were expended and $6,500,000 more were abstracted from the Sinking Funds.
Under the present Republican Administration this Deficiency has been made good, and $15,000,000 actually placed in the Sinking Funds.
Under the last Democratic Administration, the average yearly expenditure for general purposes was $7,139,633.86. Under Republican Administration, it has been $5,020,547.90— a saving of over $1,000,000 every year.
Under the last Democratic Administration the cost of collecting the tolls and keeping the canals in repair increased from $1,278,507.52 as it had been under Republican rule, to $2,250,145.62 a year. Under the present Republican Administration it has been reduced again to $1,459,164.24—a saving of $800,000 a year.
Under the last Democratic Administration, the annual appropriations for sectarian charities reached about $1,000,000. Under the present Republican Administration these appropriations have been entirely stopped—a saving of $1,000,000 a year.
Under the last Democratic Administration, the running expenses of the Legislature amounted to $422,456.01 a year. Under the present Republican Legislature, they have been reduced to $266,519.38—a saving of $155,931.63 a year.
Under the last Democratic Administration, in its last year, the Comptroller was compelled to borrow more than $2,000,000, besides all the proceeds of taxation, to meet the actual running expenses of the Government. Under the present Republican Administration, there is no borrowing ; on the contrary, it has paid all expenses and laid up $15,000,000, to provide for the debt of the State.
In view of such facts, every one of which is taken from the official records, the people can understand how it was that the Democratic Administration robbed the Sinking Funds of six and a half Millions, and how it is that, by its economy and honesty, the Republican Administration has been able to bring these funds up to an aggregate of more than fifteen millions.
