The regular monthly meeting of the Board of County Commissioners was held Monday, April 4. Present, Commissioners J. B. Biale, A. Fraser, and W. H. Sweeney; also the Clerk and District Attorney. The following business was transacted:
The chairman, J. B. Biale, reported that he and the County Auditor, C. H. Gorman, counted the money in the treasury on the 7th day of March, 1910, and found the same correct.
Whereas, On the 7th day of March, 1910, J. B. Biale, Chairman of the Board, and C. H. Gorman, Auditor of Eureka County, counted the money in the hands of the Treasurer of this county, Commissioners Fraser and Sweeney being unable to be present at said count, because it was impossible for them to attend by reason of the floods washing out the railroad and wagon road.
Messrs. Biale and Gorman reported that the said money amounted to the sum of $29,461.01, being an excess of $4,461.01 over and above the amount of the bond furnished by the Treasurer of this county; and
Whereas, The County Commissioners of this county were informed on the morning of April 7, 1910, that M. M. Van Fleet, the State Bank Examiner, who had been placed in charge of the Eureka County Bank, in which bank the money of this county was on special deposit, had died the previous evening, and that said bank was not in charge of any person, the County Commissioners deeming it necessary and that it was their duty to see that the county money was protected until such time as the County Treasurer could furnish such additional bond or surety as might be required by this Board, or until such time as a new Bank Examiner or Receiver would be lawfully appointed to take charge of said property of the Eureka County Bank, they authorized Martin Mahoney, the Sheriff of this county, to appoint four deputies to watch the said bank night and day, and to allow no one to enter said premises until such time as it was taken possession of by lawful authority.
Now, therefore, Resolved, That this Board authorizes the said Martin Mahoney, the Sheriff, to retain the said watchmen until further notified by the Board or until some person has been lawfully appointed to take charge of the property of said bank.
The resolution was unanimously adopted.
A communication was received by the Board from James Williams, tendering his resignation as Justice of the Peace of Ruby Hill township, which was accepted.
The following bids for the construction of a branch county jail at Buckhorn were received and read, as follows: S. T. Statton, $1047; S. C. Statton, $1176. Said bids were rejected.
The Board ordered that J. B. Biale, chairman of the Board, be authorized to sign a contract with Messrs. Ebert, Swan, Lyan, Dwyer and McCrea, by R. McCrea, agent, and the County of Eureka, in which the said parties agree to deed lot 61 in block 5 in the first addition in the town of Buckhorn on which to build a branch county jail.
The plats of the first and second Plyme and Harper additions of the Buckhorn townsite were approved by the Board.
It was ordered by the Board that I. C. C. Whitmore is authorized to renew the insurance on the county hospital on the same terms and conditions as it has been in the past.
A petition was received from citizens and taxpayers requesting the Board to allow aid to G. B. Miglio, a poor person. The Board ordered that he be allowed $14 per month.
The Board of County Commissioners have been meeting during the week from day to day, and on Friday began allowing bills against the county contracted during the last two months. The amount of money this will put in circulation here, including the salaries of teachers, will aggregate the sum of about $8000.
