A dispatch to the S. F. Herald, from St. Louis, published in another column, is confirmatory of the report that New Orleans had been attacked by the Federal troops, and the belief in St. Louis was that the city had been taken. The news agent at St. Louis was evidently of the opinion that the Federals were in possession of New Orleans, but in consequence, probably, of the great expense in telegraphing, he does not relate the "circumstantial evidence" which "seems to substantiate the report." The intelligence was doubtless received indirectly from the Confederate troops occupying Columbus, Kentucky, some of whom, according to another dispatch, had been sent down the river to assist in defending New Orleans. With New Orleans in possession of Federal troops, and the harbors of Charleston and Savannah effectually closed by sunken vessels, foreign governments will hardly consider it worth while to attempt to break the blockade.
