There is not a subject to-day upon which the Democratic party proper, of this State, is divided--to any appreciable degree. This singular unanimity is very reassuring to all true Democrats, and it is an earnest that in the great struggle in 1876, Texas will be found a unit, battling for the right, and the triumph of the principles of true Democracy.
Effort has been made to divide and distract the councils of the party upon trivial questions and upon frivolous pretexts. Papers only Democratic in name, have been found so lost to the memory of the past, and so lost to every feeling of self-respect and fairness as to be found willing to do the dirty work of the Radicals, in defaming and slinging the leading men of the party. Representative Democrats occupying the proudest positions in the party and in the State government, whose entire lives have been free from even the suspicion of taint, and whose every public act is a full refutation of the disgraceful charges brought against them by this purchased mendacity, have been pursued by these bloodhounds.
The people at first wondered at the effrontery of these attacks, and then smiled at their very weakness, and are now gathering about their chosen and trusted chiefs with a unanimity which, while it promises well for the future of the party, is big with the promise of early and entire discomfiture of these faithless leaders of the people.
Some of the papers we allude to have not hesitated to publish falsehoods of the most glaring and inconsistent character, and which they must have known would be promptly and effectually refuted. This course makes one wonder, in what deep cavern of human depravity is hidden the motive underlying action as reprehensible as this. Surely no ordinary disappointment, or mere unfriendliness or disobliged ambition could account for it.
The only legitimate conclusion is that the papers pursuing this course, and professing Democracy, are sailing under false colors, and under their ostensible Democracy is hidden secret hostility to the party and its principles. The people of Texas are slow to believe ill of those to whom they have given their faith, but the derelictions of these journals have been so many and of such grave character, as to arouse both suspicion and a determination to baulk and defeat them.
With the exception of these three papers (and we need not name them) the same unity and good understanding which won for Texas Democracy the splendid success of 1873, still pervades the party, and rules its councils, as the next campaign will fully illustrate.
