FROM ALASKA TO
GO TO GREENLAND
NEW YORK. Nov. 10.-(AP)-Alaskan
tame reindeer may soon be
flown to Greenland to found herds
and establish a new meat industry
there, an Arctic explorer disclosed
today.
The explorer, 62-year-old Peter
Freuchen, said plans are being
completed for an exchange of tame
reindeer from Alaska for the long-
protected Greenland musk oxen.
Freuchen, a Dane, said the pro-
posal already had been approved
by the Danish Parliament. Nego-
tiations for the reindeer, which
would come from the herds at
Nunivak and St. Lawrence Islands,
still have to be completed with the
United States Government, he said.
A receding icecap, with Green-
land becoming warmer each year,
has caused the islands' large seal-
ing industry to decline, Freuchen
said. But the milder climate has
resulted in a larger increase in
cod and a resulting upsurge in its
fish-packing industry.
