INDIANAPOLIS (Ind.) Feb. 16-(UP)-Two copies of the same 139-year-old newspaper, the Ulster County Gazette, published at Kingston, N.Y., Jan. 4, 1800, and describing the death and burial of George Washington, were discovered in Kokomo and Peru, Ind., less than a week apart.
The Peru paper is owned by Charles Guendling. He said that it had been willed to him by his mother, Mrs. Margaret Guendling, who had received it from her brother, a chief bugler in a New York cavalry company during the Civil War. George R. Hewitt, owner of the Kokomo paper, said it had been left among the effects of his father, who died in 1913, and that he hadn't discovered it until this year when he was moving from his farm home.
