TURKEY AND RUSSIA.
An article from Constantinople, of Dec. 28, says-" Letters from the Crimea state, that a Russian fleet of considerable strength. is fitting out in the Black Sea. Its destination is not yet known. Some persons think that the only object of these preparations is to support certain overtures from the Russian Minister in this capital ; whilst others are of opinion that this squadron is intended to cruise in the Mediterranean. The Porte is placed in a situation extremely embarrassing. On the one hand, Gen. Abercrombie, who has arrived at Smyrna with a fleet of 140 sail and 18,000 land forces, menaces Egypt, and urges us to co-operate in the invasion. On the other, the Emperor of Russia has intimated, through the medium of his Ambassador, that he is determined to oppose this expedition of the English, " the object of which, " as stated in M. 'de Tarama's note, " is not so much to expel the French from that country, as to occupy and preserve it for themselves. ' Should we comply with this injunction, we shall have the English to contend with ; if we refuse to do so, Russia will turn against us.-Never was the Ottoman Empire in a more perilous situation, nor less capable of self-protection. It is an old vessel, without pilot, without rigging, and leaky all over. God only knows what shall be its fate !'"
