Event Details
Mr. Smith, visiting his mother after seven years, accompanied by Miss Jamieson and Miss Winslow with her mother, brother, Mr. George Bowen, and another male, sailed down the river in a pleasure boat. The two women were knocked from the deck into the water by the boom in jibing. The men sprang overboard to rescue them but the boat drifted off, forcing the men to abandon the females; two men swam back to the boat while James Smith drowned entangled in sea grass. Several boats nearby could not reach in time.
