The Hillsborough Recorder

Biographical Sketches.—We have commenced in to-day's paper the re-publication of a series of papers, communicated to the editor of the Recorder in the year 1822, giving Biographical Sketches of William Hooper, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, who once graced the intelligent and refined society of which the town of Hillsborough was then pre-eminently distinguished, and whose remains now rest with us. These sketches were written by a gentleman well qualified for the task, not only by his superior abilities as a writer, (we have heard competent judges pronounce him one of the best in the State,) but also by his connection with the distinguished subject of his sketches, which gave him facilities for procuring facts possessed, perhaps, by no other person. The re-publication, we doubt not, will be gratifying to those who are old enough to have read them twenty-nine years ago; but a new generation has risen up since, to whom they will be entirely new, and by whom they should be read with deep interest.

These considerations alone would justify a re-publication; but an additional reason has been furnished us by the request of Col. John H. Wheeler, who desires copies. Col. Wheeler is preparing for publication a volume of Sketches of North Carolina, and seems to be searching with commendable diligence for materials to enrich his work.
