RISLEY'S L. J. LOMAX MAY BE CLASS AA "COACH OF THE YEAR"

No. 1 contender for "Coach of the Year" laurels of District 7 or Class AA of the Georgia Interscholastic Association is L. J. Lomax, head coach of the Risley High School Crimson and Gold Tigers, of Brunswick, Ga., who romped to a clean-cut 27-12 victory over the Spencer High School Green Wave, for the Georgia Class AA championship, Friday night, at Memorial Stadium, Columbus, Ga.

Last year. Coach Lomax' Crimson and Gold Tigers made their debut in Class AA by losing every game on their scheduled with the exception of a single tie with Ballard-Hudson, of Macon. This year, Coach Lomax and his capable aides, guided the Tigers to a brilliant 8-and-2 record during the regular season, which gave them the championship of Region 4.

TIGERS WIN PLAY-OFF, STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

After winning the region crown, Tigers battled the Beach High School footballers to a 13-13 dead-lock and won this play-off contest on the basis of the penetration system. The Tigers went on to stage what is regarded as a major upset by defeating the previously unbeaten Spencer High Green Wave eleven, 27-12.

A native of Atlanta. where he attended Booker T. Washington High School, Coach Lomax is a graduate of Fort Valley State College and participated in football and basketball under Head Coach William "Bill" O'Shields. A veteran of World War II, he has done graduate work at Boston University and is in his tenth year at Risley High School. where Prof. J. S. Wilkerson is principal.

Coach Lomax' able assistants are assistant coaches W. C. McNeely and Clyde Williams, also graduate of Fort Valley State College.

Now that the State Class AA championship has been decided, the fans may welcome a review of the region champs, which are as follows: Region 1, Spencer High School, Columbus, Ga.; Region 2, Carver Vocational School, Atlanta, Ga.: Region 3. Beach High School, Savannah, Ga.; and Region 4, Risley High School, Brunswick, Ga.
