Extract from a distinguished member of congress, to a gentleman in this town, dated Washington, 24th Dec.
"I am extremely gratified to receive the favorable account you have given of the condition of the University. Even here, amidst the high and animating concerns of the State, it engages no inconsiderable share of the public attention and frequently forms an interesting topic of conversation. All whose eyes are turned to the West, regard it as a distinguished object; and those who wish for the welfare of that rising portion of our confederacy, feel the deepest solicitude for the growth and prosperity of Transylvania University. The legislature of Kentucky, it is believed cannot fail to foster and support an institution which is not merely destined to shed peculiar lustre upon that State, but which holds the torch of science and literature to all the States and Territories around that senior member of the western family."
