Mr. Lawrence Keene, an officer of American ship Canton (which foundered on the 22d of Dec.) came passenger in the brig Acorn, from Lisbon, and informs us that a transport dispatched from admiral Orde, off Cape St. Vincent, arrived April 16, with intelligence of the Toulon fleet consisting of 10 sail of the line and 3 frigates, having arrived off Cadiz Bay; there were joined by all the Spanish vessels in readiness, and put to sea; destination unknown. A report prevailed at Lisbon that the French and Spanish fleets were bound to Louisiana! and that the American affairs wore a serious aspect at the court of Madrid!!
Extract of a letter from the commander of a ship of this port, dated at Lisbon, April 15th, 1805.
"I am just informed that dispatches arrived here yesterday from the English squadron off Cadiz, which state that on the 9th, twelve sail of the line (French) had made their appearance off that port and that the English were obliged to quit the station! The French squadron went into Cadiz, to join the Spanish fleet there: so that a large force must come from England to keep them in, as they have none to spare from the Mediterranean:- the Toulon fleet keeps them in continual observation."
