STILL DETERMINED.

Mayor Uhl Adds Second Chapter to His Telegraphic Veto.

City Clerk Shinkman and his deputies were more deeply perplexed yesterday afternoon. They puzzled their brains and scratched their heads in a feverish state of inability to understand the import of a message which had been received about 5:30 o'clock. At last the words were deciphered and interpreted as follows:

Charlevoix, Mich., Aug. 14. '91

W. A. Shinkman, city clerk:

Issue no license to Van Dam & Pollock over my signature. I regard veto good and action of council Monday night invalid upon first ground in my former veto. Show this and former veto to Judge Burlingame.

E. F. Uhl, mayor.

"Who in the deuce is Uhlmayer?" said the city clerk. "I am sure I can tell," spoke up Ald. Carpenter. "It's the first time I ever heard the name," chimed in City Attorney Taylor.

"Well," they all shouted in chorus, "there will be no bond issued over that signature, that's certain." The telegram still excited their curiosity. Finally a broad grin of comprehension came over their faces in unison and they exclaimed: "E. F. Uhl, mayor! That's different."

This is the second veto by telegraph and City Attorney Taylor said that in his opinion it is no better than the first, and that he considered it would not hold water. It is very patent that if Mr. Uhl can possibly prevent the granting of a license to Van Dam & Pollock to run a saloon on the hill without coming back to the city he will do so. The grounds upon which Mayor Uhl founds his veto is the invalidity of the bond which accompanied the resolution passed by the council.
