Full Text

The District Court is now sitting in this town, and there is much business to be acted upon; consisting principally of suits commenced for alleged evasions of the embargo laws. There has been one trial of this kind. Some time in August, a sloop, owned by a Mr. Emmons, of Georgetown, went to sea, having on board a quantity of fish and flour, and has not been heard of since. The Collector of Bath, in behalf of the U.S. brought an action against Mr. E. to recover double the value of the vessel and cargo for a violation of the embargo. But it did not appear that Mr. Emmons either knew or consented to the vessel's departure; and the jury very justly found a verdict in favor of the defendant.
