Full Text
The cattle disease in England has assumed the most alarming proportions, and coupled with the parching September weather experienced, is disturbing the financial and commercial relations of the country, threatening as it does a scarcity of food that will render necessary large importations. This anxiety is farther intensified by the spread of the potato rot. The alarming extent of the cattle plague may be inferred from the fact that the Evangelical Alliance passed a resolution recognizing the finger of Providence in the scourge, and speaking of it as a "terrible disease which has fallen on our cattle, and seems now to be extending to our sheep, baffling human skill and threatening a scarcity of human food." The Queen had also called the Archbishops together to frame prayer on the subject.
