"This has been a melancholy place for some time on account of advices being received from the posts up the country being entirely cut off by the Indians, all the merchants murdered: but at present we are relieved from our anxiety by the unexpected arrival of most of the Gentlemen who have been most barbarously used, several of them being frequently under sentence to be boiled for soup; four soldiers they actually boiled and eat one night, and obliged some of the gentlemen to eat bread with the blood scraped off the scalps on it. They were relieved by four nations of Indians in our interest, who escorted them to this place. They have recovered a great deal of their furs, but are yet considerable losers. The French behaved worse than the Indians."
