"Port Oratava is reduced to a most melancholy state, by the yellow fever, the number of deaths already exceeds 500, of the 3000 who remained here.
In addition to this calamity, we are likely to suffer also from civil commotion, a struggle for power having taken place between the duke of Parque and general Laburim, who is appointed to supercede the former in command, which he will not give up.
Both the governors have their adherents, and party spirit begins to run high; the respectable part of the community are in favor of Laburim, but the duke, who has the power in his hands, thinks to awe them into obedience, and has already began despotically to banish & imprison all who oppose him."
