Letter from Venice, March 25.

According to some private Letters from Constantinople, the Marquis de Villeneuve, the French Ambassador there, has complain'd, in a very serious Manner, of the little Success he has met with in his Endeavours to bring about a Peace between the Emperor, Russia, and the Grand Seignior; upon which, the Grand Vizir declared to his Excellence. "That since the last Conditions of Peace offered by the Grand Seignior had been rejected, his Highness would condescend to make new Propositions; that he therefore entirely dropt the Demand he had made of the Imperial Wallachia, and Part of Servia; and consented, at the same Time, either to restore Orsova to the Emperor, or to raze its Fortifications, upon Condition that his Imperial Majesty shall engage himself to restore to the Porte, Temeswar, and all that Part of the Bannat which reaches from the River Temes to the Frontiers of Wallachia, including the Towns or Ports of Werchnitza, Vipalanka, Meadia, and Cornia, and in general all the Dependencies of the Bannat of Temeswar; that his Highness nevertheless excepts Caransebes, which the Emperor may fortify, in order to cover the Frontiers of Transilvania; and that the Grand Seignior will cede to his Imperial Majesty a certain Territory in Turkish Wallachia, which lies very convenient to be annexed either to Transilvania, or Imperial Wallachia." The Grand Vizir, in making these new Propositions, held a Chart in his Hand, wherein he shew'd to the Marquis de Villeneuve the District which his Highness demands, and the Territory in Turkish Wallachia he consents to cede to the Emperor: at the same Time, assuring his Excellency, that his Master would not, even after the Loss of a Battle, make the least Alteration in those Conditions. The Vizir made no Mystery of the Plan of Operations which he is to execute this Campaign, but told him plainly that he would march directly to Belgrade with the greatest Part of his Army, in order to undertake the Siege of that Town.
