More Federal Consistency.
Democracy, say the Federalists, has for years past acquired most of its strength by buying votes: for half a gill of whiskey, say they, the Democrats can buy a vote, and have purchased thousands at this cheap rate. Now I would ask of whom do Democrats buy votes? Of Democrats? No; that would be like a man's buying a thing which he already possessed; therefore it must be the Federalists who are to be bought over very cheap.--Again, the Federalists boast of possessing all the property: now a man who possesses so much wealth must be shamefully indifferent in his political sentiments, niggardly avaricious, or remarkably fond of whiskey, to be operated upon for such a trifle.--Again, all the talents are claimed by Federalists: Would it be evincive of great talents in a man to sell his vote for half a gill of whiskey? Federalists would answer no; yet Federalists do this if federal assertions are to be credited.
