Full Text
Dr. Barber, who has entertained and instructed a highly intelligent audience in this town, by his lectures on the Poets, will deliver a portion of the same course in Pawtucket, next week. The critical discrimination, correct taste, good sense and nice moral perception, which distinguish those essays, together with the accurate, unaffected and emphatic manner of their delivery, render them a literary treat, that it is agreeable and improving to participate in. - It is delightful, amid the exhalations of frivolity, the dullness of business concerns, and the fog of political mystifications, which seem to constitute the atmosphere around us, to retire to the lecture room, and enjoy the pure air of literary disquisition, from which we derive an invigoration and expansion of intellect, and the development or ripening of tastes that are but too much suffered to languish among us, for the lack of culture. The citizens of Pawtucket have given repeated evidence, that habits of the most active industry are not incompatible with a disposition to improve the taste and inform the understanding.
