A correspondent says, that the following Taxes are paid for Bread; a Land-Tax on the ground that the Wheat grows on, a Land-Tax on the ground the Wood grows on it is Baked with, a Tax on the very water it is made with, a Tax on the Yeast it is worked with, a Tax on the salt used in it, besides a reasonable allowance the Baker hath, or ought to have for house-keeping being doubled.
For beer he says the following Taxes; a Land-Tax on the ground the hop grows on, a tax on the water it is brewed with, Three different Taxes laid on malt at 3 different Times or 3 different uses, 3 different taxes on the coals it is boiled with, a tax on the copper it is boiled in, Two different Taxes on the Staves the Barrels are made of to put it in, a Tax on the Hoops the Staves are bound in, a Tax on the Yeast it is worked with, a Tax on the Candles the Brewers servants use in Brewing, Three different Taxes laid on the publican at Three different Times for his Licence to sell, and Two Taxes for the Tankard we drink out of; in all 26.
