Full Text

With their new pro, Jack McLaren, to greet them, Barbara Worth country club members and non-members are expected to flock to the first war-time opening of the golf course in its history Sunday morning.

All green fees have been cancelled for the initial day of play and a special invitation to service men on furlough and leave to dig up a bag of clubs and come out for the day's festivities has been extended by Club President Pat Glasgow.

Del Rio country club members from Brawley have notified Glasgow that they will postpone their opening, also scheduled for Sunday, to come down to help the B.W. begin the fall and winter season.

The Del Rioans intended to take hoe and rake in hand and seek out weeds and excess grass on their course Sunday morning to make it ready for play that afternoon.

Shortage of labor made the members decide to prepare their course themselves.

In addition to the 40 or 50 from the north end of Imperial Valley, at least 25 or 30 players from Calexico are expected to come northward and perhaps a few from Yuma

Play will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday and will continue through the day. That evening dancing will be held in the clubhouse. At meal time all will be able to sample Mrs. Evelyn Sharpe's culinary art.

In addition to the social side of the picture for the opening, Pro McLaren is also scheduling a Red Cross tournament Results will be based upon handicaps and the scores turned in for the day's play by those making the tour of the 18 holes

One-half of the proceeds of the tournament will go to the Red Cross, McLaren announced, and the other half will go towards the purchase of a merchandise prize to be awarded the tournament winner.

All 18 permanent greens will be open for play after several weeks when nothing but temporary greens have been in use. The course has recently been thoroughly irrigated and fairways and greens are in the best of shape. All weeds and grass which might hide golf balls have been carefully removed to avoid loss of the precious little pellets.
