THE PICNIC
(Contributed)
Yesterday, a holiday for freshmen two score six
And brain and brawn united all to do some stunts and tricks
A picnic, then, and strawride, too, and to the woods away,
This was the sentiment of each and all- small wonder they grew gay.
The grove of Ward they designated to be their destination
While other classes guessing hard were filled with consternation
And they wot not where these might go, though wishing them to slumber
For freshies arn't so awful fresh and these made not a blunder.
Like brownies loosed by Palmer Cox they filled a whole hayrack
With cakes and baskets, pies and jills--and nothing did they lack.
The city startled thus by shouts and laughs and cries
Was quite oft throughout the ride by yells of high schools highs.
No need to tell the feast they spread upon the leaves of gold.
They ate up everything in sight and naught was left to mold
Then homeward all with joyous songs and hearts all tuned aright
They drop each other off the rack and say, "good bye, good night."
Long may the freshman live and learn and wiser grow with year
They brighten up our daily life and drive away our tears.
