According to the census of 1850, 2,957,656 of the slaves of the United States were black, or of unmixed African descent, and 446,656 were mulattoes. The mulattoes in the United States are about one-eighth as numerous as the blacks—the free mulattoes are more than half the number of the free blacks, while the slave mulattoes are only about one-twelfth of the slave blacks. While nearly half of the colored population in the non-slaveholding States are mulattoes, only about one-ninth in the slaveholding States are mulattoes. In Ohio and the Territories there are more mulattoes than blacks.
