Wolcott, Aug. 19, 1862.
MR. EDITOR.--SIR.--It may give some
of your readers encouragement to learn
what interest there is taken in this town
in our country's cause. When the call
came for 300,000 volunteers, men in town
threw down their scythes and left all to
the care of others, and went. Many
strong men who had families hurried
from home. and with throbbing hearts
but with defiance in looks, volunteered to
meet the foe, until the number of 33 enlisted, notwithstanding the town was reported in your journal as only five behind
to make up the number.
Last night a large number of the citizens in convention pledged the faith of
the town, on their sacred honor, to give
fifty dollars bounty to the first 10 who
should enlist before Friday morning next
at 6 o'clock, agreeing also to pay the 7
dollars per month to the nine months men
in addition to the bounty unless the State
should assume the liability. And we
have but little doubt that the number will
be made up, and thus save a draft. Out
of a population of 1160 we have already.
in round numbers, 75 in the field, which
is at least one half of our militia.
