The matter of an acute shortage of physicians and surgeons in Key West at this time, coupled with the fact that it appears that the Marine Hospital will soon be taken over by the Navy Department for other purposes, was brought before the City Council at its meeting last night, and was discussed at length.
It was shown the people of Key West are now confronted with a very serious situation inasmuch as Dr. Julio de Poo and Dr. Harry C. Galey have been absent from the city for sometime, undergoing treatment at hospitals in the north, both of whom it is expected will be away from Key West for sometime, not being able to resume their practice at this time, with the few other doctors here having more than they can attend to in the way of treating patients who are constantly calling on them.
It was stated that there are two Cuban doctors in Key West, one of whom is Dr. Gonzalez, the other's name not being mentioned, who would be glad to practice their profession in this city to help out the existing situation, but that they are unable to obtain a

state license due to the fact that they have not been declared American citizens according to the law.
It was decided to appoint a committee composed of Mayor Willard M. Albury and Councilman John Carbonell to join Representative B. C. Papy and State Senator Jim Franklin to make a trip to Tallahassee or Jacksonville and take the matter up with Governor Spessard L. Holland and the members of the Medical Examining Board and endeavor to have them extend permission, if possible, to allow the two doctors in question to practice in Key West to help out in the existing emergency, which situation has become quite acute in the past several months.
