ROLL YOUR HIPS AWAY AND WATCH THAT DIET
By Helen Jancsom
ONE OF THE BEST WAYS for Miss Hippy to whittle down the spread amidships is to hop. We can't see her doing it. Large bodies move slowly, are dead set against highly energized movements. That is one reason why the weighty ones are mighty, the other reason being too much interest in the good things of the table. Of course, Miss Hippy will tell you she doesn't eat enough to keep a bird alive. Her diet may be light, but the foods she eats are the kind that build adipose tissue.
Let her cut down on fats, sweets and starches and watch the gladsome report from the bathroom scales!
Fat should be fought when it first appears, when it is young and weak. Let the battle start when waist and hip measurements increase a single inch. They are on their way toward expansion and where they'll stop goodness only knows! When adipose tissue is once established, it is not easy to annihilate it. You are dealing then with solid flesh.
At sanitariums where weight reducing goes merrily on, the brisk, long walk every day is a fast rule. No sauntering permitted. No stopping to look in the baker's windows where chocolate eclairs tempt one. The candidate for the ready shape is told to breathe deeply, inhaling for a few steps exhaling for the same number of steps. She must pull in her tummy, keep the chest lifted, head on the level. The steps must be light, the arms have an easy swing. Walking will not take off weight unless the walk is a long one, but it will create a sense of well-being, keep the reducer cheerful and help her to cultivate good posture, which is an important part of the ritual of restoring youthful lines.
Rolling on the floor will crush fat cells that have collected on the hips. It is the best exercise for the woman whose figure has remained normal north of the waistline, but which developed bulky hips, thighs and calves.
She must lie on the floor on her back, lift the left leg as high as ever she can, stretch it full length, roll to the right, touching the floor with the toes of the left foot. Six times. Then the same movement with the right leg, body rolling to the left. Six times and repeat. The pressure against the floor, the strong pull on muscles from waistline to toes will so disturb invading fat cells that they will get discouraged, go off and die.
Attention to diet during this period will hasten the good cause. One can have lean meat, poultry, fish that is not fat and other sea foods, eggs, vegetables, fruit juices, cottage cheese, buttermilk unsweetened lemonade. Tea and coffee should be taken clear as cream and sugar are both fattening. Pastries and candies are strictly taboo.
The one thing that can do more than anything else to make your kitchen neat, your tasks easier a really good kitchen cabinet. This shining white one (with red and black trim) has 2 storage compartments, a drawer for cutlery, a flour bin with sifter, a bread box, and a porcelain enamel work top.
