Full Text
Poor Jemmy Rivington as he draws near his end, speaks much of religion; and having devoted for a number of years his Royal Gazette to the service of his royal master, in political falsehoods and lies, he is now anxious for the preservation of religious truth. Accordingly he publishes to the world, that he dies in the protestant faith, and is extremely distressed for the souls of all the members of Congress, and the inhabitants of these States. But in stating the grounds of this distress he discovers how hard a thing it is to shake off an old evil habit, even at the approach of death, and reminds us of the saying of a great man, that some people have a scurvy trick of lying for the truth. How great is the benevolence of the British King in employing among us so very faithful and zealous a missionary! For though that be of princes has long made war upon us in a most cruel and inhuman manner; though he has excited against us the barbarity of savages and negro slaves; though he has burnt our towns, ravaged our estates, and cut our throats, yet who is not sensible what abundant compensation he has made for all this in sending the great British Apostle, Mr. Rivington, to save our souls.
Poor Jemmy is the same in life or death
And gives up lying only with his breath.
