Full Text

The French frigates weighed anchor yesterday about 1 o'clock, P. M. and set sail, under a press of canvas, up the East River. At the moment they sailed, a fair breeze blew from the South. and the tide was about 3-4ths ebb. so that they would pass Hellgate at low water, the best period of the tide for passing this well known strait. Considering the direction of the wind and current, they must have made very considerable progress in the course of the night. Immediately upon their sailing, intelligence of the event would no doubt be dispatched to the British vessels at the Hook, on whose part no time would be lost in proceeding to intercept the enemy. That the Frenchmen intend to attempt making their escape through the Sound is, we think, by no means probable. We consider this movement of Monsieur as a feint, and that his object is to tempt Mr. Bull to leave his station at the Hook, and by "peeping and dodging" for some time in this interior channel, nonplus the enemy, and eventually elude his vigilance. It would be unreasonable to suppose that the Frenchmen, considering their inferiority of force, not to say of prowess, are disposed to risk a rencounter ;--should an event so improbable occur, there is no doubt that the British tars, (to use the language of old England) will give a good account of them.
