GIRL IS BURNED TO DEATH IN LOVE TRYST

Dalton, Ga., May 6.--The story of a tryst between a girl and a young man that became a rendezvous with death, was told here Tuesday with the body of the girl, Minnie Owens, of Chatsworth, awaiting burial and with the man, "Butch" Barksdale, also of Chatsworth, being held on several charges.

The Owens girl died Monday evening at Chatsworth of burns received in a fire that destroyed the home of Porter Huffstettler, one of the leading citizens of that town. Barksdale according to authorities, was with her when the fire occurred, but escaped the house unhurt.

Driving out from Dalton Sunday evening Barksdale and the girl arrived at the Huffstettler house, which they found empty, the family having been called to Calhoun by death in the family. Barksdale, it is said, told the police he went upon the front porch, knocked at the door, and finding it unlocked, opened it and entered when no response came. The girl went with him.

Sitting in the darkened house, Barksdale lighted a cigarette for a smoke before resuming the journey. A lighted butt, carelessly thrown against some draperies, is supposed to have ignited them and enveloped the room in flames before the intruders knew what had happened.

Barksdale ran out, but the girl is believed to have become bewildered, to have stumbled into the quickly mounting flames and her clothing to have caught fire. Her screams and the light of the blaze attracted neighbors, but before they could carry her away, she had been fatally burned.
