Cincinnati Enquirer: The strike has resulted in a defeat for the men. It has shown them that they hurt themselves. It has shown them how it fell indirectly on the poor and innocent all over the land, and inflicted very little injury on those at whom it was aimed. May not some sympathy now be shown to the erring and suffering laborers themselves? 'Must there be executions by wholesale after victory? May not the same compassionate forgetfulness be indulged for our workingmen that was extended to leaders and all after the great rebellion? Or is this worse than death? We trust that this reaction will be stopped at once, and that a large and generous public sentiment will seek rather to eradicate the causes of dissatisfaction than to punish its manifestation: that the workman may be justly paid, and that the past may be forgotten in a happier and more harmonious future.
