FROM FRANCE.

By an arrival here from Nantz, on Sunday. we have been favored with French papers to the 2d July. They contain an account of the naval action between their fleet, and the British, under Lord Bridport; which differs from that already published in but few particulars. The French say that the English fleet consisted of 21 sail of the line, besides frigates; theirs of but 12 sail of the line, two sixty fours cut down, eight frigates, and a few smaller vessels. They mention the loss of the Formidable, Tyger, and Alexander; and the English fleet still remained in Quiberon-bay—That they had landed at Croisic, a town 35 miles between the rivers Loire and Vilaine, W. of Nantz from five to ten thousand emigrants, who were to join the Chouans, who are still in rebellion in the vicinity of Nantz. Neither of these events appear to depress the spirits of the people in the least.

After the battle. Lord Bridport summoned the French at Belleisle General [Boucret] to surrender, and to acknowledge Louis XVII, but the General returned a spirited answer, declaring that he and his soldiers had sworn to die Republicans, that they would perish at their posts, rather than the slaves of England should boast of having possession of Belleisle.

The English Mediterranean fleet, under Adm. Hotham, having appeared between the coasts of France and Minorca, the English Toulon fleet. of 19 sail of the line, had sailed in quest of them.

Assignats, as was to be expected, were continually depreciating. On the 26th June, in consequence of a report, that the army of the Rhine had experienced a check, and that Gen. Pichegru was dead, one thousand livres in assignats could be purchased for a guinea, but on the succeeding day, the Committee of Public Safety directed their Secretary to publish a placart, in the following words, "Stockjobbers and Jacobins your hopes are no more, Pichegru is well." In consequence of this, assignats appreciated considerably.

At Nantz, July 2, Flour was from 22 to 24 dollars per barrel, and rice 12 dollars per hundred.
