Customs Inspector J. R. Barnard Brings Runaway Horse To Standstill-Applauded By Onlookers.
"Nice work, clever stop" were the words of commendation spoken of Customs Inspector J. Barnard this morning after he had brought Dr. Sauvignet's big sorrel horse to a standstill at the risk of injuring himself and the horse which he was riding.
The words of commendation came from the crowd of onlookers who saw the performance. Between eleven and twelve o'clock this morning a number of guests of the Hamilton hotel and business men in the vicinity found themselves in the location of considerable excitement caused primarily by a runaway.
The big sorrel horse of Dr. Sauvignet dragging an empty phaeton was seen coming up street a rapid trot, when it reached the northeast corner of Jarvis plaza it turned to the left and started on a run past the Federal Building, Customs Inspector Barnard was sitting on his horse in front of Federal building talking to J. J. Haynes when he noticed the horse coming by him on a run. He spurred up his horse and started in pursuit. After a dash he reached the head of the runaway horse, and brought the horse to a standstill against the wall at the rear of the Mercy Hospital. In gaining control of the horse Mr. Barnard barely escaped a collision with a telegraph pole and second time in steering the horse into the wall narrowly escaped being dashed against the wall himself.
The only damage done to the vehicle was to a rear wheel, which was badly sprung.
