Messrs. Editors:

Being a constant reader of your paper since its first appearance, I beg the favor of a few lines. In your issue of the 2d we find a communication over the signature of "Rowlesburg," recommending and urging the name of Charles Hooton as a person well qualified to represent this district in the House of Delegates, and that he is the choice of the citizens of this place: as to his qualifications I will say nothing, but positively do say, that he is far from being the choice of the people here. This I assert boldly and without fear of contradiction, being personally acquainted with all the voters of the corporation, and after having read "Rowlesburg's" communication, made inquiry and substantially ascertained, as above stated, that he was anything else than the choice here. At this particular crisis it is of the utmost importance to have such representatives as the times require, and that the people can rely upon; and now while urging the names of Major David Stemple of West Union, and Wm. B. Zinn, Esq., of the Evansville district, I will here remark that both gentlemen have a modicum of intellectual bullion, and both are well known here as also at home, and it would be an honor to old Preston to be represented by them; then let us stand firm and be very cautious as to our choice of candidates. Mr. Charles Hooton may be a good man in his way, but I here firmly assure you that he does not, nor never will suit the people of this section of the county, as their representative. If he is nominated, he will undoubtedly be defeated; then why not secure the nomination of such men who we are certain can be elected. These are facts and "facts are stubborn things." A word, &c.

Main Argument

charles hooton is not the choice of local voters and would lose if nominated; instead, nominate major david stemple and wm. b. zinn, who are qualified, popular, and certain to win, to ensure reliable representation during this crisis.
