President Roosevelt had a hair breadth escape from death at Pittsfield, Mass. when an electric street car struck and demolished the Landau in which he was riding. He was thrown violently to the ground and bruised about the face. Secretary Cortelyou was slightly hurt in the back of the head. Gov. Crane, of Massachusetts, who was also in the carriage, escaped injury. William Craig, a secret service agent who had accompanied the President on his New England tour, was instantly killed. D. J. Peatt, driver of the carriage, was seriously injured, but it is believed he will recover. The motorman and conductor were placed under arrest on a charge of manslaughter. The President reached his home at Oyster Bay last night and will go South on his scheduled trip end of the week.
