BRUSH FIRES ARE BECOMING SERIOUS

Forest Ranger and Patrolmen Working Hard to Control Menace.

Eternal vigilance is the price which Mike Guthrie and his assistants in the forest service are demanding at this time, if costly forest fires are to be averted. During the past week, which has been without rain, there have been a number of fires, some of them large, which have caused much uneasiness, and the forest service has placed men at every fire, with instructions to do everything possible to keep them down until rains come to afford relief.

Last Sunday the Grand Rapids fire department was called to the county fair grounds, where a fire had got started in the fine pine timber there. The new fire engine, with its auxiliary pumping apparatus, came in very handy, enabling the fire to be drowned out without a great deal of difficulty.

The same thing happened again on Monday, when a fire was put out in the brush not far from Ice Lake.

On Sunday there were three fires in the vicinity of Bovey and Coleraine, and a large number of men were employed to fight them from the vicinity of buildings. These were still burning late last night.

Southeast of Blackberry, on the west side of the big bog, a fire which had been burning for some time assumed threatening proportions, and covered several hundred acres of territory, burning some hay stacks.

The worst fire in the county was reported as between Effie and Craig, where the fire got away from men engaged in building a new road, according to Mr. Guthrie. This fire has covered a large expanse of country, and has seriously damaged some green timber there.

Rain would be particularly welcome at this time, for the entire country side is very dry, and care is needed to avert damages which may be high.
