The Expense Account
There are some important things you should know about how you are spending your money and there is no other way you can learn them than by keeping an expense account. Ordinarily people just throw up their hands in terror when the matter of where the money goes is mentioned.
It is a wise financier who knows, from keeping tab, just what became of that which he earned with the sweat of his brow.
Keep an account book, properly ruled and labelled, and each night note in it what money you have spent that day. If you can carry the book in your pocket or your purse, so much the better, for that will enable you to jot down every expenditure at once and save you much anxious puzzling when you come to reckon with yourself.
The expense account shows you if you are allotting too little or too much money to any one item; and if that amount should be increased or reduced another time.
It tells you whether there has been a fair division of expenditures among the various members of the family and who has been greedy or who has been short-changed.
It shows you where luxuries have been purchased at the expense of necessities, and points the way to reform.
It makes possible for you to decide what corners to trim, that you may increase your savings without undue sacrifices.
And then, it is a Satisfaction to look back over the year and know what did become of it all anyhow.
