The Turning Point.
There is every reason to believe that a turning point has been reached in the tide of affairs in this section It is reflected in an altogether different spirit manifested by local citizens-a feeling of confidence manifested on all sides, of confidence in the growth of Elkins and its importance as a railroad and industrial center.
There may and probably have been times when we all have been extremely discouraged but after a period of depression it is reasonable to assume in view of factors which cannot be overlooked that better things are in store and that the volume of business will once again reach normal proportions
Credit has of course been stretched.
We believe it will improve conditions if the average man or woman will make it a point to do more of a cash business or at least to have regular settlement days each month for it is difficult for the man or woman in business to get along unless their customers do pay promptly, as many of course do.
But the point is that there has been an improvement in conditions, even within the last few weeks. The banks report such improvement. Accounts are more active. Deposits have been increased.
There will be further impetus to business in this section when ground is broken for the new shops and when the Western Maryland begins general improvements in this vicinity.
But the most important factor of all is returning public confidence-the absence of the knocker and the presence of the booster. Community confidence helps tremendously and there is to be observed on all sides more confidence than has been in evidence for some time--a confidence based on many favorable developments
Every cloud has its silver lining and we in this section are beginning to discern such a silver lining. The Review believes that this is only the beginning of an era of much prosperity for Elkins and for Randolph county and that as additional roads built and other improvements are made the city will continue to grow.
