Two things are of supreme importance when thinking of attending college. The first is grades. Perhaps increased emphasis should be placed on this all important factor. This would make the average student more conscious of his need to make at least a B average.
Money is the second stumbling-block the college-bound student meets. Today many scholarships are being offered on a nation-wide, state-wide and even a county-wide basis. However the student's own school and teachers know his capabilities better than any multiple-choice scholarship test could possibly know them. Therefore, it is my suggestion that small scholarships should be offered from the school and awarded to a deserving student or students.
Student leader organizations like the SCA and Beta club would be probable scholarship fund raising groups. Perhaps a campaign could be launched for one month each fall with these two groups acting as leaders. Each active club in the school would be asked to hold a fund-raising project or contribute a set sum to the cause. At the same time SCA would constantly remind the students of the campaign by posters, displays, assemblies and surveys to find out how many students do plan to continue their education beyond high school.
At the end of the month, the money would be counted and the amount announced. If it fails to reach the goal it would be saved and added to the next fall's collection.
By having the whole school working for the scholarship money, there would be considerable enthusiasm built up for it. The person who would be awarded the scholarship would then receive a great boost from his fellow students and a boost on his way toward a college education.
