Russell Sage, the much-talked-of New York millionaire, was, it is said, in Wilmington on Wednesday last and, in company with other capitalists and engineers, visited the machine shops of the J. Morton Poole Company, where a gold placer machine is being built. There were twenty men in the party and they were driven to the shops in closed cabs. The party went to the machine shop, where the machine is and the engineer in charge put the placer in operation. Sand was used to test the machine. The machine gave entire satisfaction and the party seemed pleased with the test. The machine is now perfected and ready to be shipped to Klondyke, to which place it will be sent.
The new device has only been patented a short time, and this is said to be the second yet manufactured. It is made especially for the patentee and weighs several tons.
By actual test this machine can wash 1000 cubic yards of sand in a day, and if the sand yields but $3 worth of gold in a cubic yard, the device will turn out $3,000 in gold each day.
Russell Sage is said to have purchased an interest in the placer.
A reporter called at the office of the Poole Company and gained an interview from Morton Poole. He smiled when asked if the great New York Midas had been inspecting the machine. "I heard," said Mr. Poole, "that Russell Sage was one of the party of men who visited the shops on Wednesday last, but we did not know it until after the party had departed."
The last and final test of the placer will take place the latter part of next week.
