If Initiative 41 Passes
A study of highway employment during the last five months reveals that contractors had an average of 666 men in their employ during the period, according to William G. Ferguson, manager of the Montana Automobile association.
"State and federal funds that will be used on highway work if initiative 41 is successful at the general election will mean 3,160,000 man hours of labor during the next two years. This amount of labor is equivalent to 752 men working eight hours a day for two years," Mr. Ferguson said.
The initiative would permit the state highway commission to issue $3,000,000 in debentures to be redeemed over a period of ten years with money collected on the state gasoline tax. The federal government will grant the state more than $3,000,000 to match funds raised by sale of the debentures. Mr. Ferguson pointed out.
"Success of the initiative will prevent Montana's highway program from standing still during the next two years," he added, "without placing a new or additional tax on anyone."
"The money road workers will receive during the next two years if initiative 41 is successful will be an important part of the state's entire income as well as being a great aid toward putting unemployed men to work," Mr. Ferguson.
