Full Text

Maine. —The whigs have hardly a show in the popular vote of Maine. They are whipped hard. Notwithstanding this, they have gained a member of Congress, not by their own strength, but by democratic divisions. A plurality elects, and the democrats ran two candidates. So in the case of governor, the democrats had a pair of candidates, and of course could not quite elect either, though they poll nearly two votes to one over the whigs. The legislature is democratic. On the presidential issue the democrats are united, and they are as sure to give the State to Frank Pierce as the sun is to rise on the day of election.
