THE AMERICAN ARISTIDES.
Col. PICKERING served his country during the whole revolutionary war, in the most eminent stations. He was the first Adjutant-General under General Washington; he was a member of the Board of War: and he closed his services in the station of Quartermaster-General.
Since the peace he has been successively the first Postmaster-General under the present Constitution—Secretary of War, Secretary of State, and now is Senator in Congress, from his native State.
He is now OLD and POOR.
Such is the man, marked out for party calumny in Baltimore. Beardless boys have presumed to question others for speaking well of him; and remorseless partisans,—without any merit of their own, have waged their puny warfare against his illustrious name.
We mention these things briefly, because, it is the only suitable way of noticing the subject. The same infatuation is not to be found elsewhere; and it is fit, therefore, that we say no more; lest we be tempted to put even party rage to the blush.—N. American.
