Thirst for blood, however, seems to be insatiable—and one of the individuals concerned stood pledged; our informant states, to fight three different antagonists in one day. The fights, we understand, were to be with pistols, but a variety of other weapons were taken along—among others, the deadly Bowie knife. These latter instruments, we are told were whetted and dressed up at Grand Gulf, as the parties passed up', avowedly with the intention of being used in the field.
In a few days we expect to hear of a most inhuman massacre having taken place. The gentleman originally challenged (Col. Nicholls) is not likely to yield one inch. He is represented, even by his best friend, one of his original seconds, to be of the most impetuous disposition in view of danger; and as to the other party, it is sufficient to say that his name is Bowie—a nephew of Col. James Bowie, and an inheritor of his untiring perseverance in resenting injuries. A gross indignity was offered him by Col. Nicholls—one of that kind, which it seems, cannot be atoned for except by blood.—New Orleans Bulletin.
